Louis Riel is the biography of a Canadian populist, rebel, and, arguably, nut-job who was involved in two local conflicts during Canada’s late 18th Century expansion onto the prairies. Dec 16, Michael rated it liked lluis Shelves: The layouts are clean and clear with about nine panels per page to tell the Metis story. The characters, animals, carts, trees and buildings are drawn with a soft, rounded look reminiscent of Herges’ Tintin. I very much enjoy graphic novels and Brown’s ability to tell a complicated story through his art and biograpby text are the hilights of this work.

It’s a good, thorough read and reminded me of Rick Geary’s work which is also brilliant.
The serialization sold poorly, but the book version was a surprise bestseller. Lois Louis Riel and Paying for It were the first two books made available,  though Brown is a print-lover who professes little interest in e-books, or computers in general.
These along with the bibliography make it a great starting point to learn about Louis Riel’s tumultuous life and his role in history. Chester Brown’s Louis Riel: Recommended for those who like maps, history, and political intrigue.
Although clearly sympathetic with Riel, he retains the clear eye of the thorough researcher, providing a detailed bibliography.
The characters’ heads became smaller while biograpgy bodies and hands grew larger, with Riel appearing “like the Hulk in a wool suit” after his hilltop religious revelation.

And normally I would forgive this if it suited the writing, biiography had a purpose, or even if the writing was just so kick ass that you didn’t care what the artwork looked like.

This approach is in great contrast to the inward-looking comics Brown had previously been known for—notably his autobiographical work. As a result, Louis Riel is a doubly fascinating read: We know what our problems are. Sources aren’t cited very well and as this takes place in the world of Canadian espionage and political backhanding, it’s very important to use good sources.
Brown, Chester May Maps are included to show the shifting borders. Mar 29, Stewart Tame rated it liked it. But none of those are true, it was just kinda bad art.
Given the comic strip nature of the book I expected something along the lines of a traditional comic. Either way, if you do read this comic book without any prior knowledge of Riel, you’d better also read the notes at the end.

Brown was persuaded in to assemble a book collecting his shorter pieces: During this time, he returned to Canada to Montreal where he was elected as Member of Parliament for Provencher but never took his seat as, having not been granted amnesty for Scott’s death, he dreaded capture.
